A section of traders in Mautuma Ward in Lugari Sub-County, Kakamega County, have pointed an accusing finger at the area Member of the County Assembly, Charles Anyona, for abandoning his promises immediately he was elected.
Some of the agitated traders in Mukuyu said their attempts to reach out to the leader to fulfill his promise of setting up a modern market have proven futile.
“During the campaigns, he did meetings here and promised us to build a modern market, but until now, nothing has been done,” Joseph Vikiza Lukothe, the market chairman, said.
Mr. Lukothe said that the same was true of the former MCA Stephen Mulonga, who had promised to upgrade the market but never turned his promise into reality.
Rina Mandera, a trader, said the market started with 50 traders, but the number has decreased immensely, putting it on the verge of collapse.
“We have tried to reach out to Mheshimiwa Charles Anyona, but nothing has been done. We’re now calling upon Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera, Kakamega County Woman Rep Mama Elsie Lihanda, and our able governor, Fernandes Barasa, to come to our rescue,” she said.
Ms. Mandera said they have been forced to contribute among themselves and construct a mud-walled latrine to sustain their businesses.
“We don’t even have running water. We used mud-walled structures that are about to collapse. Please, our leaders, do something because our kids depend on us here and we don’t have any other income generating activities,” she lamented.
