A school is a place where students’ mental, spiritual, and physical well-being is taken care of.
All this is achieved not only by teachers but also by the supporting staff who play an important role in ensuring the future of an individual learner is intact.
The community of Lumama Mixed Day Secondary School in Lugari Sub-county, Kakamega County, has this morning woken up to the sad news of the demise of Francis Lugadiru, alias Franco or Kongo, who has been a cook ever since the school started in 2010.
This comes just a few days after Eunice Midega, who had served the school for five years, passed away on Tuesday after allegedly developing high blood pressure.
“Eunice has been staying at home since November last year, nursing injuries from a broken leg due to an accident she experienced at home and badly caused her a fracture. She reported to school on Monday 10th this month, but on Tuesday in the afternoon she started feeling dizzy and was pronounced dead upon arriving at Lumakanda Sub-county Hospital where she had been rushed,” said Mr. Steve Kibisu, a teacher at the school.
Concerning the demise of Franco, the teacher said he had developed malaria and his drugs were finished before he passed away.
“He reported to school as usual on Friday, did his work before the principal gave him some cash for medical care. While going to the hospital on Saturday, he was overpowered by the illness at a bridge while waiting for a motorbike. He fell into the river, hitting his head on a rock before he was rescued and rushed to the hospital, ” he said.
Medics at the Lumakanda County Hospital termed his situation critical and ordered that he be taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
“They waited for an ambulance, which took long to arrive, and he passed on,” he said.
The school principal, Mr. Osore, confirmed the details and mourned the deaths of members of his staff who he said were diligent and kind to students and teachers.
“It is a huge blow to the school. Losing two dependable staff members is not easy. We are standing with their families to ensure they are given a descent burial,” he said.
