On Tuesday, police were outwitted in a thrilling rat-and-mouse game with the Azimio la Umoja convoy along Waiyaki Way in Kangemi and Kiambu Road in Nairobi during Azimio protests.
The authorities were eager to corner Azimio leader Raila Odinga and prevent his access to major places in the city, including the Central Business District.
About 15 Land Cruisers were deployed in hot pursuit of the former Prime Minister and other Azimio leaders who were expected to lead thousands of supporters in protesting against the cost of living and other key issues after failure of bipartisan talks.
After a chase of about four hours, police believed they had sustained the protests and prevented escalation, but to their surprise, they realized that they had been chasing a car carrying Odinga’s loyal supporters, Nuru Okanga and Gaucho, the self-proclaimed ghetto president, and not Raila himself.
Unbeknowest to the authorities, Raila and other Azimio leaders, Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka, were elsewhere at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation preparing for a press briefing.
The leaders later addressed members of the press, condemning the withdrawal of their security as an attempt to assassinate Raila and Kalonzo.
