Former and current trainees at the Lugari Teachers Training College (LDTTC) in Lumakanda Ward, Lugari Sub-county in Kakamega County will have a financial backbone after the process of setting up a welfare for them commenced.

Registration targeting former and current students is ongoing, with the welfare already up with 26 fully registered members.

“The welfare will cater for the needs of both current and former students, such as helping them during tough moments like bereavement and illness,” Oloo Wafula, the chairperson, said, adding that issues like school fees will be dealt with as well.

“We will handle such issues as a family,” Oloo added.

He further said the welfare will also provide mentorship to students on matters career and life skills.

“We will divide our members into groups to handle different topics to mentor students not only here but also in other schools. This will in turn attract sponsors to fund our group,” he noted.

The chairperson reiterated that the fee to join the welfare is currently at Sh 50 but will be hiked as soon as the limit set is achieved.

“Those who will join later will be required to pay Sh 300 before they can become members, in addition to the Sh 200 monthly contribution,” Oloo said.

The group is currently working on its constitution before it can process the bank account and certificate.

“We intend to have a bank account and paybill numbers to streamline the process of receiving and accounting for money from members. We don’t want to have scenarios where money from a member cannot be traced,” Oloo said.
