Controversial religious leader Eliud Wekesa, alias Yesu wa Tongaren, was grilled for six hours on Wednesday as police advanced investigations into cultic organizations across the country.
Yesu wa Tongaren presented himself at the Bungoma Police Station on Wednesday morning and was flunked by some of his followers, who started singing hymns while escorting him into the police station but were stopped by police.
Mr. Wekesa told the journalist that there’s no case to answer and that his lawyers will be the sun and the moon.
“I know that according to the law, only those found at fault are arrested. Since I began God’s work at the age of 30, I have never done anything wrong. My lawyers will be the sun and the moon because I have no sins in relation to doing wrong against human beings,” he said.
Tongaren’s grilling comes when the death toll from the Shakahola cult deaths rises to 130 as the court detains cult leader Paul Mackenzie, his wife, and 16 followers for 30 more days in custody.
The investigations are ongoing after President William Ruto formed a taskforce to review regulations governing religious organizations in the country.
