Residents of Misanga Village in Mautuma Ward in Lugari Sub-County, led by their area chief, Pamela Kulali, acted fast and saved a woman who was about to commit suicide after failing to eat for some time.
The chief helped the villagers stop the 65-year-old woman, Loice Sikolia, from jumping into a well this morning.
Ms. Kulali narrated that she was called to respond to the emergency and stop the woman from taking her own life.
“The woman was complaining of hunger and a difficult life. She said she did not have any food in her house, and no one was willing to help her,” the chief said.
She then took her to the Mautuma Sub-County Hospital for medical attention.
A neighbor told WKT that the woman’s situation is dire; she has been living alone and has gone for days without food, which could have contributed to her mental state and led to depression.
“Her children have not sent her any money to keep her going. She keeps on complaining of a stomachache, headache, and pain in the neck. I think it is because she has been starving,” the villager said.
This comes barely a week after a man was found dead after committing suicide at his mother-in-law’s house in the same ward.
Chief Pamela is advising community members not to take their own lives but to seek solutions for their problems from friends and family.
“My office is open for guidance and counseling.” I have a team, including myself, to offer advice and help to my people,” she said.
