A woman from Lugari Constituency has expressed her anger at area MP, Nabii Nabwera, accusing him of lying to a totally orphaned student that he’d clear his school fees through the bursary program.
The woman, Beatrice Shimaka, who identifies herself as the sub-county UDA chairperson, paid a visit to the home of the student, who stays with her grandmother in Mautuma Ward, and found him working on the farm.
The unnamed boy, a day scholar at Mugunga Secondary School, is required to pay fee arrears of more than Sh9,000 to settle in class.
Ms. Shimaka, who also spoke to the boy’s grandma, accused the MP of lying that he’d pay a bursary for every orphaned student in the constituency, only to leave many of them stranded.
“I gave him (the student) a death certificate, and he went and applied for a bursary. Since then, I have seen no help forthcoming. He just goes to school and sends it back for fees,” the student’s grandmother said.
Ms. Shimaka warned the MP against jumping from one media station to another and lying that he has awarded bursaries to all totally orphaned students.
“Total orphans are suffering while he lies to his people on TV and radio stations,’ she said as recorded in a video, faulting those praising him on social media platforms and accusing them of hypocrisy.
Mr. Nabwera disbursed Sh28 million in February to over 3,000 secondary and university students, including 166 total orphans, in the constituency.
The MP, while launching the program, promised to give priority to total orphans.
“During the campaign period, I promised to invest Sh40 million in bursaries, scholarships, and the motivation of teachers in our schools, it was not a lie. I also promised to fully educate total orphans; I was not lying. Today, as we gather here, we have paid a whole year’s school fees for total orphans in secondary schools and universities. They will be fully sponsored for the four years they will be schooling,” he said.
