A school in Mautuma Ward in Lugari Sub-County is facing closure after failing to settle a land debt.
Kewa Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) school in Tebuka, Mbagara Sub-location, will be closed at the end of this year if the management does not pay for the third acre of piece of land it stands on.
Damaris Shivachi, the owner, confirmed to the Western Kenya Times that she will repossess the land and put it under a profitable project after the school failed to honor their agreement five years after it started operating.
“It is now five years down the line, and I have not been paid anything. Nobody has approached me. I gave out my piece of land so as to help children who were walking long distances to school, but the community and government have failed to honor their part of the deal,” she said.
Maxmilah Khasandi Mmbasu, a teacher in the school, says the institution, which has 25 children in Playgroup, PP2, and PP3 classes, would be better closed because it is forgotten.
“You can imagine having all these kids in one classroom under one teacher who is required to attend to all of them. I am overworked here,” she said.
The kindergarten school has no toilet, kitchen, or playing ground. For the toilet, children use the nearby bush. There is an open pit that was meant to be used as a latrine, but it poses more risk to the learners.
The school is usually excluded from helpful programs enjoyed by others, such as the recent distribution of toothbrushes.
“Pamela Anyona, wife to MCA Charles Anyona, promised to take care of the school under her Mama Tony Charity in January, and it was among five schools that she promised to take care of, but that has never come to pass,” she said.
