The County Government of Bungoma has signed a worthy deal with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
The deal will see the county government contribute Sh45 million as REREC pumps in a similar amount in a move to light up market squares and enhance business in the county.
REREC will also support other forms of renewable energy and source additional funds for the electrification program in rural areas.
“The cooperation will also undertake on-farm and on-station demonstration of wood-fuel species, seedling production, and management, and further undertake feasibility studies and maintain data with a view to availing the same to developers of renewable energy resources,” REREC CEO Peter Munga said during the launch of the program.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka said the deal will foster the use of renewable energy and technologies, including but not limited to biomass (biodiesel, bioethanol, charcoal, fuelwood, and biogas), municipal waste, solar, wind, tidal waves, small hydropower, and co-generation, but excluding geothermal.
“This will provide an enabling framework for the efficient and sustainable production, conversion, distribution, marketing, and utilization of biomass, solar, wind, small hydro, and municipal waste,” said Lusaka.
