Shanderema stuns Musingu in thrilling final showdown at Bukhungu

Shanderema are now the kings of Western secondary school football.

Shanderema Secondary School, popularly known as the Eagles, are the new Western Region Secondary School champions for boys’ soccer after defeating Musingu High, the Scorpions, in a thrilling clash at a packed Bukhungu Stadium.

The Eagles silenced the four-time national champions with a resounding 3-0 victory in the finals, attended by football fanatics across Western Kenya, among them Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

Shanderema’s success journey included edging Kibabii Boys’ 1-0 as Musingu beat Lukhuna Secondary 4-0 in Friday’s semis at the Kakamega Approved Secondary School.

“We thank God for helping us win this tough match. After they beat us in the County Games, we went back to the drawing board and rectified our mistakes, and that has paid off today,” Shanderema Assistant Coach Gilbert Omollo said.

Musingu coach Brendan Mwinamo accepted the results and congratulated their opponents for their amazing feat.

“That’s the nature of sports; you win some and lose some. I wish Shanderema success in their games. They have my blessings,” Mwinamo said.

In the girls’ final, Butere Girls from Kakamega County defeated Madira Girls from Vihiga County 1-0.

Bukhokolo were crowned western regional champions after seeing off Bumala girls 41-37 on the final.  

Mwitoti are the new volleyball girls’ western regional champions after beating Lugulu Girls in a five-setter.

National champions Koyonzo Boys won the rugby sevens title after dominating Vihiga High 19-7 in the final played at the Kakamega Bull Ring.
