A 21-year-old man will serve two years in jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing assorted household items, among them a mattress.
Kakamega Resident Magistrate Caroline Cheruiyot found Festus Liluma guilty of the offense after he confessed.
“I agree that I was found with the mattress and I am deeply sorry. My plea to the court is to be fair in the judgment; I will not repeat the mistake,” he said in mitigation, as reported by The Standard.
Mr. Liluma is accused by Ann Murugi, the complainant, of breaking into her house between October 1 and October 2 while she was away.
“Ms. Murugi reported the matter to the police and a search was conducted to find the lost items,” the prosecutor said.
“Later, Murugi identified a mattress that looked like her lost one in Liluma’s house, who is her neighbor. She then informed the police, who consequently arrested the accused.”
