Kakamega man dies in pit latrine while trying to retrieve phone

The attempt by a man to retrieve a phone that had fallen into a pit latrine ended in tragedy after he died after drowning in human waste.

Salim Opupa Opono, 29, had offered to enter the latrine and get the C31 mobile phone that had been dropped in the pit by one Semion Busaka, who was relieving himself.

Police said Mr. Busaka, from the Emakwale area in Luyesha, had reported the incident and was seeking assistance to get his phone back.

Opondo is said to have slid before falling into the pit.

His lifeless body was retrieved from the pit by officials from the Kakamega County Fire Brigade and taken to a local mortuary pending postmortem analysis.
