The body of Lawis Andagi, a man who went missing after allegedly aiding his fellows to escape from a police cell, has been found in the Kipkaren River in Lumakanda in Lugari Sub-County, Kakamega County.
The body was discovered two days ago by Andrew Murunga Makokha, who was on a feeding expedition.
“While I was fishing, I stumbled upon a human body and immediately reported it to the authorities,” Murunga said.
Munyuki senior village elder Festus Njande confirmed the incident and said the man drowned after being overpowered by the angry river a week ago after helping two of his accomplices escape from a cell in Kipkaren.
“When they fell into the river, the two were able to escape, but this one didn’t make it. It is by luck that we positively identified the family of the deceased. So, there is no more cause for alarm,” the village elder added.
Residents are now demanding answers from police officers on how the three managed to escape from custody.
“We feel that something is not adding up, which is why we need the police officers from Kipkaren Police Station to explain to us what happened,” said a resident.
Gentrix Mugaime, a family member, said they are yet to come to terms with the shocking incident.
“We are very sad after losing the young man through unexpected circumstances. We can’t tell what caused him to drown in the river. We want to be told how someone can escape from police custody and end up in a river.”Mugaime said.
