A section of football fans from Lugari Constituency have expressed their discontent with the manner in which the just-concluded NG-CDF Football Tournament was organized.
Fans who spoke to WKT during the finals of the tournament at St. Paul’s Lugari Boys High School grounds on Tuesday said the event, hosted by area MP Nabii Nabwera and attended by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and a host of sub-county MCAs, looked “cheap” and “disorganised”.
Frustration mounted over delayed kickoff times for the semi-finals for both men and women teams, sparking clashes between team officials and organizers on player eligibility and match rules, almost resulting into fist fights.
The MP, who arrived at around 10:00 a.m. was seen moving from one end of the field to the other, fuming at one of the event organizers, the event organizer, over the delay in kick off.
Technical glitches prolonged the setup of the public address system by almost two hours, hindering its efficiency when finally operational.
A near-cancellation of a ladies’ semi-final at halftime due to player protests added to the chaos.
The inadequate podium space left invited guests scrambling for standing room or seats in the overcrowded tent.
Fans criticized the event’s lack of attention to detail, citing poorly marked pitches.
“Look at how the pitch is marked with saw dust. There’s no attention to detail and I am sure the quoted amount for the event does not reflect on the ground,” a fan, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
Despite the organizational shortcomings, the tournament concluded late in the evening, with Ajax FC and Mshale Ladies, both from Lumakanda Ward, emerging as champions in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
