Mourners from Lugari Constituency and beyond gathered in solemn remembrance at the final send-off of Bonventure Ounza, 24, and Callistus Apwoka, 20, two brothers tragically shot dead by officers from the Kasarani Police Station in Nairobi on February 20, 2024.
The emotional funeral took place in Jordan Village, Mautuma Ward, drawing the presence of local leaders, with the constituency’s MP, Nabii Nabwera, among them.
Amidst a sea of condolences, the grieving parents, Jacob Atundo and Phelisters Atundo, fondly remembered their sons as disciplined, obedient, and hardworking individuals.
Mrs. Atundo expressed the profound void left by their absence, emphasizing the enduring memories of laughter and shared moments. She vowed to persist in the pursuit of justice for her departed sons.
“We will miss our sons dearly. We will miss their laughter and all the moments we shared. Even as they are gone, we will continue fighting for their justice,” said Mrs. Atundo.
The funeral service was graced by the ACK Church Western Region, presided over by Mautuma Parish Pastor Enock Onyango, lending a spiritual presence to the sombre occasion.
The deceased brothers were casual labourers at Neema Livestock and Slaughtering Investments, a company located in Luckysummer, Nairobi, that exports meat to the Arab world. Bonventure had worked for the company for two years, while Calistus had worked for six months.
They lived together and worked the same shift, which would vary across the morning hours based on the nature of orders. The two had been assigned a shift to begin at 3:30 am on the fateful day.
Accused of involvement in a local robbery incident, the brothers, despite surrendering and pleading to be taken to their workplace just a stone’s throw away for identification, were met with a devastating outcome. Bonventure was fatally shot at point-blank range, and Calistus met a similar fate after imploring the police to end his life upon witnessing his brother’s demise.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has called for public calm and restraint as they undertake a meticulous investigation into the matter.
