Musingu High School and Butere Girls have emerged as the 2024 Kakamega County Secondary School football champions.
In an exhilarating boys’ final at the Mumias Complex, Musingu High School triumphed over Munyuki Mixed Secondary School with a 3-1 victory, successfully defending their county title.
Munyuki, the surprise contenders, had shown their mettle by defeating the Western Region reigning champions, Friends School Shanderema, 3-0 on penalties in the semifinals.
Musingu’s path to the final saw them edge out Lugusi Secondary School 4-1 in a post-match penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Both Musingu and Munyuki will advance to the Western Region Championship, set to take place at Bungoma High School in Bungoma County. The winner of this championship will secure a spot in the national tournament in Kisii County next month.
On the girls’ side, national champions Butere Girls retained their title by dethroning Kakamega County defending champions Archbishop Njenga Girls 2-0 in the finals, with Patience Atieno scoring both goals.
Butere Girls had earlier overwhelmed Musoli with an 8-0 victory in the semifinals, while Archbishop Njenga Girls had a commanding 5-0 win over Mwitoti in their semifinal match.
In the third-place playoffs, Friends School Shanderema secured a 2-1 victory over Lugusi Secondary School to claim third place in the boys’ category. In the girls’ category, Mwitoti emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Musoli.
Meanwhile, in Vihiga County, Ebwali Secondary School edged out Chavakali High School 3-1 on penalties to claim the county championship after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. In the girls’ final, Madira Girls successfully defended their title with a 3-1 victory on penalties over Ibubi Girls.
