The Paris 2024 Olympics commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony on July 26, 2024, ushering in a fortnight of athletic prowess and cultural celebration. 

The event marks Paris’s return as a host city, exactly a century after it last held the Summer Olympics in 1924. 

The opening ceremony, held along the scenic River Seine, showcased the city’s historic landmarks and vibrant history. Featuring over 10,000 athletes from around the globe, the Games encompass 329 events across 32 sports, making it one of the most extensive and diverse Olympic editions to date.

Notable athletes are representing Kenya in the historical competition, showcasing the country’s renowned prowess in long-distance running and other sports.

Eliud Kipchoge

The two-time Olympic marathon champion aims for a third consecutive gold medal in the men’s marathon. Kipchoge is widely regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time

Faith Kipyegon

One of Kenya’s most prominent middle-distance runners is known for her exceptional performances in the 1500m and 5000m events. Kipyegon is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1500m, having won the event in both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020​. She is expected to compete in both the 1500m and 5000m races in Paris, aiming to add to her impressive medal tally.

Hellen Obiri

Competing in both the marathon and track events, Obiri is a versatile runner with multiple world championship titles in the 5000m and 10,000m

Peres Jepchirchir

The reigning women’s Olympic marathon champion is part of the marathon team, alongside Hellen Obiri and Brigid Kosgei

Timothy Cheruiyot

Running until August 11, 2024, the Paris Olympics will feature 17 days of competitions held at various venues throughout Paris and its environs, such as the Stade de France, Bercy Arena, and the Champs-Élysées. 

This edition emphasizes sustainability and inclusivity, with events staged in both temporary structures and iconic public spaces. 

Notably, the Games introduce new sports like breakdancing and aim for gender equality by balancing the number of male and female participants.
