A recent shooting incident involving Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president and renowned musician, has ignited heated debates across Uganda.
Bobi Wine was discharged from Nsambya Hospital after spending a night under medical care. He was admitted on Tuesday following a confrontation between his supporters and the police at Bulindo, Central Uganda, during which the opposition leader claims he sustained a serious injury from a bullet allegedly aimed at taking his life but striking his left leg instead.
However, allegations have since emerged, claiming the medical report detailing his condition was fabricated. Sources indicate that a senior medical officer at Nsambya Hospital has been suspended for allegedly falsifying a report that confirmed Bobi Wine suffered a gunshot wound.
The doctor is accused of receiving 5 million Ugandan shillings (173,031 Kenyan shillings) to produce a medical document recommending advanced treatment abroad. Investigations later revealed the report had been forged, and Bobi Wine’s injuries were less severe than initially claimed.
Eyewitnesses say Bobi Wine was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and connected to monitoring machines, though his injury appeared to be minor. Hospital officials intervened and discharged him with a minor plaster cast, contradicting the earlier reports suggesting he had been seriously injured.
These revelations have fueled skepticism among many Ugandans, who now believe the incident may have been staged to generate sympathy for Bobi Wine’s political campaign. The incident has sparked widespread discussion about the reliability of political narratives, with critics accusing Bobi Wine of orchestrating a “stunt gone wrong.”
Many have even drawn parallels between Bobi Wine’s incident and that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was injured in an assassination attempt about two months ago during a rally in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his right ear.
Despite the controversy, NUP leadership, through the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, insists that Bobi Wine was indeed shot and injured. They claim that security operatives attempted to interfere with his medical records, prompting his swift discharge from the hospital.
