The General Secretary of the Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU), Dr. Isaac GM Andabwa (OGW), has expressed condolences to families affected following last evening’s tragic accident at River Yala’s Iguhu bridge along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.
Andabwa, who is eyeing for the 2027 Lugari parliamentary seat, is calling for immediate safety interventions at the notorious accident spot to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The accident, which occurred around 6:30 pm on Wednesday, involved a fuel tanker traveling from Kisumu to Kakamega, colliding with two 14-seater matatus. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker lost control after hitting a bump. The collision left multiple fatalities and several others critically injured, drawing attention once again to the need for enhanced road safety measures at the Iguhu blackspot.
“Iguhu area is a blackspot and many lives are being lost at this particular spot year in – year out. I beseech KeNHA to relook at the road along that stretch and redesign it, erect more road safety informative billboards, bumps and reflective road marks that are visible,” said Andabwa, urging the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to address the recurring safety issues along this stretch.
Andabwa, also emphasized the importance of partnerships to promote road safety, recommending collaboration between organizations such as Toyota Kenya, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and the county governments of Kisumu, Vihiga, and Kakamega. He advocated for training and sensitization forums for drivers using this high-risk route.
“I am appealing to all road users and law enforcement officers to observe and strictly adhere to road safety regulations and measures as we step into the Christmas festive season,” he added.
