Chekalini: 20-year-old student drowns while swimming in Kipkaren River

Operations are ongoing to retrieve the body of a 20-year-old student who drowned on Sunday while swimming in the Kipkaren River at Bondeni Village in Chekalini Ward of Lugari Sub-county, Kakamega County.

Victor Aswani, a student from the neighbouring Itumbu Village who studies at Chekalini Secondary School, was in the company of his little cousins on a fishing spree before the tragedy struck on Sunday at 2.00 pm.

“He was in the company of the little ones swimming and fishing. He had dived into the water for the second time that day. Police who visited the area said they found his clothes and some fish. It is something they are used to, only that this one was an unlucky day,” said Vancy, his sister.

She added that divers had spotted a body believed to be his yesterday, but it had disappeared.

Operations to retrieve it will resume today.
