Kakamega: Man strips naked after losing Sh20,000 bet in bullfighting competition

A 36-year-old man from Lukume Village in Malava, Kakamega County, has shocked residents after he stripped naked upon losing a bet in a bullfighting competition on Monday.

Martin Mwanje, who was expecting to win Sh20,000 after placing a Sh10,000 bet with his opponent, was distraught after his bull fled the fighting ground moments after the competition had kicked off.

Mwanje’s bull could have been overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd cheering it and its giant opponent on. It was at this moment that it decided to run for dear life, lest it be killed in this cultural scenario whose peak is for one of the bulls to die and people enjoy its meat.

Mwanje said this was too much for him to control.

“I was sure my bull would win the fight. We had agreed to contribute each Sh10,000, and the winner would be awarded 20,000 shillings,” he said, “I was shocked to see my bull being pushed to the ground by the other bull.”

Spectators laughing at him added to his fury and anguish, leading him to strip.

Mr. Malick Shanguy, the area chief, expressed disbelief and urged residents to find other means to earn a living and stop relying on betting.
