Kimilili: Five dead, 10 hospitalized after taking poisonous chang’aa

Those who survived complained of stomachaches.

Five people in Kamukuywa Village in Kimilili, Bungoma County, have been confirmed dead after consuming poisonous chang’aa.

Bungoma County police commander Meshack Musyoki said the other 10 have been hospitalized at Kimilili Sub-County Hospital following the Tuesday evening incident.

Kimilili Sub-County police boss said four died on Tuesday evening while one died on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment.

Three of those who died were women, while two were men. They were identified as Eunice Nakitare, Redempta Nakhungu, Lawrence Simiyu, Beatrice Wamuloli and Wafula Simiyu.

“The victims took the brew this morning. They started complaining of stomach pains thereafter. Four died at the scene, while ten were taken to hospital for emergency medical care,” Musyoki told the media.

The illicit brew is suspected to have contained poisonous chemicals because survivors complained of stomachaches, loss of sight, and body weakness.

Samples have been taken to the government chemist for analysis.

“Once the test results are out, we will arraign the two suspects,” Mr. Musyoki added.

The village has several drinking dens with many scattered only 100 meters apart.
