Plight of woman who has been living in a cave for 4 years with her 5 children

Kenyans are wondering how the County Government did not learn about the case until when awarding scholarships.

Residents of Bungoma have taken to social media to question how the County Government only learned about the case of a woman living in a cave during the process of awarding bursaries to candidates from needy families who performed well in the KCPE 2021.

The unidentified woman has been living with her five children at the foot of Mount Elgon since she was evicted “from their land” four years ago, according to a report by Bungoma County Governor Wycliffe Wangamati’s Press Service.

Her two children, Phoebe Cheruto and Felix Kiprop, have been treking kilometers away for three hours every day to attend lessons at Korung’otuny Primary School.

According to the report, the two learners, who are among candidates who sat the KCPE 2021, have been waking up at 4 am every morning for school.

The report has not revealed how many marks each candidate scored in the exam.

“The family’s life is the story of pain. Faith is their daily bread and being awarded the Governor’s scholarship is what keeps them alive,” the report on the County Government’s Press Facebook page read.

The Governor’s officers said that they learned of the case while visiting homesteads for information to help in awarding the scholarships.

While some have applauded the Governor for showing concern for the devastated family, others criticized the management for sideshows.

“Five years and the county never noted and considered her plight?” Asked Suleiman Mbatiah.

The Western Kenya Times is trying to get in touch with the family for details about the story.
