A 30-year-old graduate from Matete Constituency in Lugari started a car wash business after searching for employment for years without success.
Victor Wanyama graduated from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology with a Second Class Upper Division in Bachelor of Commerce in 2016 with high hopes that he would secure a life-changing opportunity.
“I knew that being a graduate, getting the job was near to living my dream,” he told West FM‘s Joseph Amunya Otieno.
Wanyama says he has applied for several jobs in different companies, including one at the Nzoia Water Company, to no avail.
He says his resilience and patience seemed to have given him away until a day in 2018 when an idea rung in his mind — starting a car wash.
“One day, an idea struck my mind, thinking of starting my own business and employing myself. I looked at the surroundings of Matete and realized that I could establish a business and be my own boss,” said a determined Wanyama.
Wanyama bought a few pieces of equipment to start off. Despite facing challenges at the initial stages, he now makes at least Sh1000 a day from his business booming with clients.
“You would rather find something to do than just sit and lament about everything. Life is a matter of trying to find what you can do,” Wanyama advises fellow youth.
The young lad looks back to the days he was a university student with big dreams of working for big companies. He is glad that the dreams put him in a position to think even bigger.
