Bungoma gubernatorial candidate for the United Democratic Party (UDP) has been hospitalized after he was severely injured following an altercation with goons at an opposing camp’s rally in Tongaren Constituency on Saturday morning.
Zachariah Barasa, who suffered severe head injuries as a result, is said to have stormed a rally of John Chikati, a Ford Kenya parliamentary candidate for Tongaren Constituency, in Mukuyuni, and started dishing out handouts.
His security team is said to have fled after chaos erupted, leaving him behind to the mercy of a charged crowd allied to Mr. Chikati.
A witness said the gubernatorial candidate was rescued by bodaboda riders.
“Were it not for the bodaboda riders coming for his rescue, he’d have died,” the witness commented on a social media post.
Mr. Barasa, on his Facebook account, has accused Mr. Chikati of organizing goons to attack him.
“Even if Chikati and Ford Kenya goons were to kill me people of Bungoma will still be liberated from the york of poverty, the fight is on,” he wrote.
