Police officers were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse a crowd of hundreds of motorbike riders who stormed into the home of a man suspected of stealing a motorbike in Chekalini Ward in Lugari Constituency.
A witness said police officers from the Chekalini Patrol Base were forced to counter and rescue the suspect from the crowd which had already seized him. The officers then broke into the suspect’s house and found a stolen motorbike disassembled, among other items.
The man, identified by the nickname of Shiandika, was whisked away to the police station in the middle of a horrendous confusion.
Just after he was rescued, the man started hurling insults at the riders, arrogantly telling them that his case was not going far past the police post.
This infuriated the crowd which demanded the police to hand him over to them to let them finish him once and for all, a situation that forced the police to call for reinforcement from Lumakanda Police Station.
The riders went on to burn his house in protest.
The impounded motorbike is said to belong to a resident who lost it two days ago.
The riders lamented a series of criminal activities that have led them to lose their motorbikes.
