A widowed mother of 10 in Mautuma Ward of Lugari Sub-county, Kakamega County, has narrated the plight of her daughter who has stayed home from school since her father was bedridden and passed away in May 2021, and is now pleading for help to take her back to school.
Mama Grace Nyakoa says her life changed to the worst when her husband Tom Masinya, who was the sole breadwinner, died unexpectedly and left behind a family of six girls and three boys, including her daughter Rachel Khaeche, 16, who was forced to drop out of school just when she had joined Form One.
“My daughter had joined Macho Secondary School and was finishing Form One 2021 and after a few months, my husband died and that forced her out of school,” she said.
The mother narrated how their situation is worsening as days go by, how they cannot afford basic needs to live even an average life.
“Even bathing is a problem because we cannot afford soap. No sugar, no salt no nothing. I don’t have a job or a source of income. It demands a lot to live this kind of life,” she lamented.
Her daughter dropped out just after doing her Form One end Term Three exams, in which she managed to score a C+ (plus).
“Each morning she sees others going to school when she cannot tears trickle down her face. I also want her to go but I have no means to make my wish come true,” Mama Nyakoa said.
The widowed mother is now calling upon well-wishers, including the area MP Nabii Nabwera, to assist her situation and help her daughter join the school so as to secure her future.
Her daughter wishes to get a chance to go back to school and study with others.
“Poverty in our home is rooted, but I believe through education, I can change the narrative and help my family and community. I just wish someone was there to take me to school,” Rachel said.
Her brother Boaz Kiprop Molenje, who joined the NYS after finishing secondary school, said his elder brother is at Bukura National Polytechnic while the youngest brother finished Form Four and is hustling in Nairobi.
Two of his sisters got married and other three are still in school.
