Chekalini: Man burnt to death for stealing maize

The man’s body had visibly deep injuring likely to have been inflicted by stoning.

A man in Mlimani ‘B’ Village of Chekalini Ward in Lugari Sub-county has been burnt to death by a mob after he was allegedly caught stealing maize from a neighbor’s farm this morning.

A photo seen by the Western Kenya Times shows the man’s body on the ground in a sugarcane plantation with deep injuries on the head and the rest of the body with stones lying near, suspected to have been used to in the process of lynching him.

The man, identified as David Kitunga and alleged to be a serial thief, is said to have been discovered by people stealing maize with his brother identified as Joseph before they laid a trap and caught them when they had come for a second round of the loot.

“Some people spotted them while underway the theft and laid a trap. They were caught but his brother managed to escape untouched. David was burnt before being stoned to death,” a witness told the Western Kenya Times on phone.

The body of the deceased is still lying at the scene awaiting police from Lumakanda Police Station to carry it to the mortuary and begin investigations.
