10-year-old girl drowns in River Nzoia while fetching firewood

Her friends kept quiet on the incident until later.

A  family in Matete Ward, Lugari Constituency in Kakamega County is mourning their 10-year-old girl  who drowned in River Nzoia while fetching firewood with her friends.

The Grade Six pupil at Makhukhuni Primary School by the name Belinda Nekesa is said to have slipped and fallen into the river

Confirming the incident, Chevaywa Location Chief Alex Goricho said the girl’s friends went home and remained silent about the incident which happened at 11 am until 4.30 pm when her parents got information about the incident.

The chief has cautioned parents against allowing children to collect firewood and play around the river saying it is dangerous for them.

Divers from Icare School of First are looking for the body.
