Senate votes in favor of special committee to investigate Governor Mwangaza impeachment charges

The Governor was impeached by MCAs.

The Senate has voted to form a special committee to look into Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.

Out of the 35 senators, 33 voted in favor of forming the 11-member committee, which is expected to be voted on in a House session on Wednesday.

The committee members include Majority Whip Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Karungo Thang’wa (Kiambu), Ali Roba (Mandera), Esther Okenyuri (nominated), Peris Tobiko (nominated), Eddy Oketch (Migori), Joseph Kamau (Lamu), Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi), Agnes Kavindu (Machakos) and Johannes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta).

The committee is expected to file a report to the House within 10 days, and if it upholds any of the charges in its report to the Senate, the report will be debated and a vote taken by all 47 elected Senators.

For the impeachment of the governor by Meru MCAs to be held, 24 out of 47 Senators are required to vote on four of the charges.

If a majority of senators do not support the impeachment, it will be thrown out.

The governor is accused of nepotism, illegal appointments, illegal dismissal, and usurping the constitution and statutory functions of county organs.

The others are incitement, bullying, vilification, and misleading campaigns against other leaders; forceful entry into the assembly precincts and mobilization of unlawful riots against MCAs; violation of PFM laws; and misconduct relating to the nomination of CEC.
