The High Court in Busia County has ordered the inspection of ballot boxes in nine polling stations in a petition seeking to revoke the election of Dr. Paul Otuoma as governor in the August 9 polls.
Nambale MP John Sakwa Bunyasi filed a petition in court after losing the election on an Amani National Congress ticket.
asking the court to order the scrutiny, recount, and nullification of the Busia gubernatorial election results on grounds of massive rigging.
Otuoma won the governor’s seat on the Orange Democratic Movement ticket by garnering 164,478 votes, while Mr. Bunyasi received 92,144 votes.
“Our prayer is for the court to authorize the IEBC to scrutinize and recount votes in all polling stations. We believe that there were irregularities, including stuffing of votes in ballot boxes,” documents filed by Mr. Bunyasi in court read.
Justice David Kigen has ordered the inspection of ballot boxes in Bumutiru RC, Elugulu Trading Centre, Esiunga, Elugulu, Namahindi, Bumulimba, Odiado, and Busia township primary school polling stations.
The exercise should be conducted within the next seven days. The deputy registrar, who will supervise the scrutiny, will then file a report and hand it to the court before January 17, 2023, the day the matter will be mentioned.
