It has now been one week since Form One admissions kicked off across the country, but unfortunate for two sisters from Sinai Village in Mbagara Sub-location, Mautuma Ward in Lugari Constituency, they have no hope of joining because of a lack of fees.
Faith Makungu, 16, got 302 marks as her sister Barbra Alivitsa, 14, scored 277 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) last year at Macho Muslim Primary School.
Faith was called to join Bishop Sulumeti Girls in Lumakanda Ward while Barbara was given a chance at Immaculate Heart Secondary school in Mautuma Ward.
According to Everylne Adengo, their mother, fending for the two children and raising their school fees is difficult for her because she raises them alone after separating from her husband 11 years ago.
She separated from her husband because he was a drunkard and irresponsible. Efforts to contact her husband for a clarification of this proved futile for he was unreachable on phone.
“I am so ashamed that even getting Sh10bob to buy my daughter a book is very difficult. It now three years since I developed a heart problem. I cannot do any work. I also have arthritis and generally body weaknesses,” she said, adding that she has used more than Sh100,000 to try to treat the illnesses.
Mama Adengo added that the community is against her because she’s poor, and that has made her stigmatized and her life unbearable.
The two sisters and their mothers are now appealing to well-wishers across the country including Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera to help them join Form One and make their dreams of becoming specialists of heart diseases come true.
“We need help for sure. Our MP Hon. Nabii Nabwera please help us, we want to learn and change our society and help our mom to live better life,” one of them, Faith Makungu, said.

Tom Lutali is a seasoned scribe based in Lugari Sub-County in Kakamega County who writes human interest stories and sports for WKT.
