A man from Bituyu village in Mautuma Ward, Lugari Sub-County, is living with fear following a number of weird incidents that he believes are the result of dark forces.
The latest occurrence has been his house burning after a fire erupted from “nowhere” and destroyed property worth thousands of shillings.
The man, Enock Barasa, had gone to the field to till his land in preparation for planting when he heard screams from the direction of his house. When he went to check, he found his two mattresses and about 18 kilograms of maize and beans burned.
Recently, he found one of the mattresses folded and put into the water pot.
“My children’s clothes were all destroyed by a fire whose cause cannot be traced. Everything seems out of place at this place; I don’t know what will happen next,” he told the Western Kenya Times‘ reporter who visited him.
This is despite members of his Holy Spirit Church camping at his home for a whole week to pray against the alleged dark forces believed to have been the cause of some significant happenings since a month ago.
The first incident that shook his mind was on January 26, 2023, when a cat killed all his 23 chickens at night.

On February 28, 2023, his son Mark Anaya, 15, became ill and developed speech problems. He was rushed to the Mautuma Sub-County Hospital, where medics failed to detect any problem.
The ill-fated man said whenever his son tries to drink tea, it turns into cow dung. He discovered salt in his tea this morning.
“I was forced to call for prayers for one week so that things could change, but that too seems not to be working,” he narrated.
The strangest of all is when he found his clothes removed from his house and scattered outside in February.
“Sleeping has become hard for me. I always have a bible in my hands, and prayer has become my daily weapon,” the troubled man said.
