A court in China has sentenced a man to jail after he was found guilty of scaring 1,100 chickens that belong to his neighbor to death.
The man, identified only by his surname as Gu, is said to have brushed shoulders with his neighbor, Zhong, who allegedly cut down his trees without permission in April 2022.
Seeking vengeance, Gu sneaked into Zhong’s chicken farm and using a flashlight to scare the chickens, making them cluck in terror and huddle in a corner in panic, leading to the deaths of hundreds of them.
This was not the first time Gu had trespassed on Zhong’s property.
In a previous incident, he had caused the death of 500 chickens which led to his apprehension and was forced to compensate the loss with a hefty Ksh57,600 fine.
This time around, his actions proved to be even more catastrophic as he was responsible for the death of 640 of Zhong’s beloved birds.
On Tuesday, the court in Hengyang ruled that Gu had intentionally caused “property loss” to Zhong, with Chinese authorities saying that the 1,100 dead chickens were estimated to be worth a staggering total of KSh 266,282.
The court therefore sentenced Gu to six months in prison with one year of probation.
