Salim Namusasi, who showed interest in vying for the Mautuma MCA seat, has donated sanitary pads to 400 pupils in schools in the ward.
Accompanied by the area chief, Pamela Kulali, the politician distributed the items to 75 pupils at Macho Muslim Primary and 63 pupils at Mbagara Primary, each receiving two packets containing eight pieces.
Mr. Namusasi had already given pads to 262 pupils during the Ramadhan period.
Through the initiative dubbed “Okoa Msichana Akae Darasani,” the leader aims to ensure girls are not disrupted from learning for lack of sanitary towels.
“The economy is tough, and parents are going through a hard time providing for their children. Sugar is high, and the price of unga has skyrocketed. I have launched this program to ease the burden of buying pads for the young girls,” he said while interacting with pupils and teachers at Macho Muslim Primary.
He expressed concern about the number of girls who are forced to skip school and stay at home during their menses because they cannot access sanitary pads for lack of money.
Mariam Salim, one of the pupils who received the towels, appreciated Mr. Namusasi for showing concern for their issues.
“I am very happy, and I promise to work hard and pass my exams. We are calling upon well-wishers to emulate Mr. Namusasi’s gesture and help us learn smoothly,” she said.
Leonard Misiko, Macho Primary deputy headteacher, thanked the aspiring MCA for being kind to the little girls.
“Indeed, it is concerning the number of girls who stay at home during their periods. This ends up affecting their learning. If we get a good supply of sanitary pads, I am sure they will pay attention in class,” he said.
Mr. Misiko also acknowledged that the leader earlier donated a 5000-liter water tank worth Sh48,000 that has been of aid to learners and teachers, especially during the drought.
