An accountant at a technical training institute was robbed of more than Sh400,000 moments after withdrawing money from a bank in Bungoma town.
The accountant, who was with an instructor at the college’s driving school at the fateful moment, told police that she had withdrawn Sh504,000 in the afternoon of May 18.
She sent Sh56,000 of the money to the principal of the institution before they started their journey back to school, according to a news report by The Star.
On reaching the Romina area on their way to college, they were blocked by a white salon car with five occupants on board: four in traffic cop uniforms and one, the driver, in civilian clothes.
Two of them alighted with a pocket phone and handcuffs and informed them that they were looking for a woman suspected of transporting marijuana.
They took her handbag containing cash, Sh446,861, her ID card, and bank slips, and their ignition keys, entered the car, and left.
Their attempt to intervene by taking a motorbike was met with an AK-47 pointed at them before the robbers sped off.
No arrests have been made so far, with the investigation team believing that the robbers are police officers or conmen disguising as cops.
Such incidents have become rampant in Bungoma town of late.
