Kibabii University shuts down for entire semester after student’s death sparks unrest

Kibabii University has suspended all academic activities for the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year following protests sparked by the death of a third-year student.

The university is mourning Griffin Wanjala, a student from Webuye East who was reportedly attacked by unknown individuals at around 10pm on Monday. Wanjala was rushed to Lifecare Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Reports indicate that four students were attacked near the university that night, leaving Wanjala dead and three others injured.

Wanjala’s death triggered protests on Tuesday morning as students boycotted classes and took to the streets demanding justice and improved security.

Police were deployed to contain the demonstrations, with officers using tear gas to disperse the protesting students as tensions escalated.

Following the unrest, the University Senate held a special meeting on Tuesday and resolved to suspend all activities for the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year with immediate effect.

The university directed all students to vacate its premises and hostels by 3pm on Tuesday. Students living in rented accommodation around the university were also advised to seek alternative housing until teaching and learning resumes.
