Lugari Ward elected Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Grey Moi, has laid bare his top priority plans for the people of Lugari Ward for the next five years he is going to hold office.
In an exclusive interview with the Western Kenya Times, Mr. Moi first thanked his supporters for electing him, saying that he has finally received a chance to prove to the people of Lugari Ward what he is capable of.
The newly elected leader, who unsuccessfully contested the seat in both the 2013 and 2017 general elections, defeated his 20 opponents after garnering 1,764.
Among top priorities in his manifesto, Mr. Moi said he has a plan to partner with the elected Lugari MP, Nabii Nabwera, to have a free feeding program for children in primary school.
“If the area MP agrees to work with me, I will have a special program for pupils all over Lugari Ward to ensure they have meals in school to facilitate their learning. There’s no need for pupils such as those in Standard Eight to be sent home for maize and beans when we can organize for that,” he said.
Moi also promised to solve the problem of electricity affecting some areas in the ward, saying he will lobby for electrification and ensure every homestead is connected to power.
“Long gone are the days a home operated without electricity, it is my wish that everyone is connected to a power supply,” he said.
Concerning the poor road network, Mr. Moi said he will use his power to negotiate with the County Government of Kakamega to work on some roads that have been neglected for a long time.
“I will be the leader of the people, not like the outgoing MCA, Musa Wangila Makhapila, who even abandoned his job to go vie in another ward. I will never leave Lugari Ward residents to themselves,” he said.
The elected MCA also promised to solve the deadlock between residents and the Lugari Forest management on the issue surrounding the ban on planting maize on land leased to farmers in the forest.
“Our people have limited land due to the expanding population and they have been depending on maize as their staple food and source of income. Once I resume duties, I will arrange for a talk with the forest management to try to convince them to let people farm maize,” he said.
Impending Election Petition
The MCA dismissed the decision by his closest opponent, Richard Sisa, to move to court to challenge his win, saying they are but mere threats.
“I am not afraid because I am confident that I won the election fairly. It is his right to move to court but that won’t stop me from serving the people of Lugari Ward. If the win is overturned, I am still confident that I will beat him once again,” he said.
Mr. Sisa, who revealed to the Western Kenya Times that he was planning to file a case in court to challenge Moi’s win, had emphasized that there were malpractices at the Lugari Polling Station that led to unfair declaration of his opponent as the winner of the election.
The presiding officer in charge of the polling station, Peter Ssemulati, was arrested and has a pending court case.
