Grief as Kakamega family buries student after mysterious illness

Residents of Shinyalu Constituency in Kakamega County are mourning the death of a young woman whose sudden illness and passing have left family and friends searching for answers.

Mourine Shikanga Ndeche, a student from Shelelo Ward, was laid to rest at her rural home on Saturday, following what relatives describe as a brief but troubling illness that began shortly after she joined campus.

According to a social media post by a family friend identified as Caisedo Stano, Mourine reportedly developed complications in her leg characterized by intense pain, prompting multiple hospital visits and even surgery. Despite efforts by medical professionals, the exact cause of her condition remained unclear.

Her death has sparked emotional reactions online, with mourners expressing pain and frustration over the unexplained nature of her illness, with some alluding to witchcraft.

Friends and family remembered Mourine as a young, ambitious woman whose life was cut short just as she began pursuing her higher education dreams.

“Mourine only started feeling pain in her leg after she joined campus, and from then her condition kept getting worse. It is very painful to lose such a young and promising life under unclear circumstances,” Stano said in a Facebook post.
