AFC Leopards boosted their Kenya Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mara Sugar at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
Ingwe entered the match seeking redemption after the Mashemeji Derby disappointing results and made a bright start, taking the lead in the 13th minute through Hassan Beja. The midfielder finished off a swift attacking move to hand the hosts an early advantage.
Mara Sugar responded strongly and restored parity in the 30th minute after winning a penalty. Drona Openda stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to level the score at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.
AFC Leopards returned from the break with renewed energy and regained the lead in the 62nd minute. Victor Omune reacted quickest after Mara Sugar goalkeeper Ogenda parried Tyson Otieno’s effort, tapping home from close range to put Ingwe back in front.
Mara Sugar pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but AFC Leopards held firm defensively to secure all three points.
The victory keeps AFC Leopards within touching distance of the league’s top contenders Gor Mahia while handing Mara Sugar another setback in their campaign.
