Greenland FC convenes AGM to mark 22 years of nurturing talent

This is the second official Annual General Meeting (AGM) after last year’s as the club strategizes in a bid to dominate local and regional football.

Lugari Constituency’s Greenland Football Club has conducted its end-year Annual General Meeting (AGM) to mark the milestone it has achieved in the year 2022.

The team, which started in 2001 as a group of young primary school pupils grazing cattle in Lugari Forest at a place called Mulwanda, held the AGM to present an opportunity for the club’s officials, members of the technical bench and players to reflect on the status of the team for the year 2022 and lay down plans to come up better in the New Year.

Greenland, which is marking 22 years of nurturing talent in young people, is celebrating achievements, among them the recent success of its former player Nashon Wekesa, who joined the KPL’s KCB FC in September.

The meeting, which was held at the clubs’ home ground at Sirende Primary School in Lugari Ward on Thursday, was attended by 10 club officials, members of the technical bench, and players.

More than 22 players were present, including the team’s captain, Harvic Keverenge, and assistant captain, Vasen John.

Harvic Keverenge and Vasen John raised a number of issues affecting players, among them insufficient playing and training equipment such as first aid kits, balls, and boots.

They also insisted on the need for consistency in training and motivation for team members to turn up for training and thanked players for remaining disciplined, a factor that has contributed to good results across the year.

Players who spoke raised concerns such as the importance of having meetings and adhering to the agendas, the need to embrace sportsmanship, positive interaction with fans, cooperation between the junior and senior teams, and the importance of fulfillment of promises by the technical bench.

The coach, Dan Oketch, asked players to pull up their socks in training and remain disciplined. He used the example of Nashon Wekesa who he said became successful after working hard and remaining true to the ethics of the game.

“The year has been good. I would like to humbly thank all the players and the technical staff for standing strong for the team throughout the year,” he said.

Mr. Oketch’s sentiments were echoed by his assistant, David Kisa, and every member of the technical staff who spoke, especially on the need for players to be self-driven and to own the team and their talents.

Members of the technical bench, led by Tom Wabuge, promised to handle a number of issues raised, including purchasing balls, first aid kits, and facilitating players’ transportation to games, as well as helping individual players purchase boots.

Greenland FC marked the end of 2021 by clinching the Dennis Manyengo Super Cup, and it is looking forward to finishing 2022 on the same note by lifting the Johny Young Cup on Saturday, in which the winner will be awarded a trophy and Sh20,000 in cash, among other things.
