Kakamega School closed indefinitely after dormitory fire

Kakamega School has been closed indefinitely following a fire that destroyed part of Hobley Dormitory on the night of Friday, prompting the school administration to send students home as investigations into the incident begin.

According to reports, the fire broke out at around 8:00 p.m. while students were attending evening classes. Emergency response teams, including firefighters from Kakamega County and police officers, responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread to other buildings within the school compound. No injuries were reported, although property of unknown value was destroyed.

In a communication issued to parents and guardians, Chief Principal Elphas Aliva Luvaso directed families to collect their children from the institution on Saturday morning. The closure is expected to remain in force until investigations establish the cause of the fire and safety assessments are completed.

Kakamega School, one of Kenya’s national schools with a student population exceeding 2,000 learners, now joins the list of institutions affected by the ongoing unrest. Several secondary schools have either been temporarily or indefinitely closed following cases of arson, vandalism, and student demonstrations that have disrupted learning.

Parents who gathered at the school following the incident expressed concern over student safety and called for swift action to address the rising cases of unrest in learning institutions.
