Lugari Ward MCA Grey Moi/WKT
United Democratic Party’s candidate in the August 9, 2022, Lugari Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) election, Grey Moi, has spoken on Tuesday’s nullification of his win by the court.
The Kakamega Law Courts nullified Moi’s win citing a number of issues raised in a petition by his Movement for Democracy and Growth party opponent, William Makhalanya, that sought to declare the poll conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) unconstitutional on allegations that it was marred with numerous irregularities.
Mr. Moi, in a call with Western Kenya Times‘ Sam Oduor this morning, said the judgment doesn’t shake him and he is ready to affirm his victory in the upcoming by-election to be held 60 days after the court’s decision.
The leader said he’ll not be appealing the judgment because “there’s no need”, and is ready to face his opponent afresh in the ballot.
“We have issues around; we have to work on the roads, which are in a sympathetic state. Instead of concentrating on such issues, this man is coiling me up and failing me, but I know my people understand,” he said.
“I am not worried of anything because I was elected by the people. If it is a rerun, I am not worried about it; in fact, my people are very bitter about it. You see, the time we are wasting now is time for development,” Moi added.
He said the nullification of the election was supported by some ‘big fish’ whom he believes want him out of the seat.
“This is a push from somewhere, I am aware it is not Makhalanya alone. There are other some big fish who are behind it, anyway one of this days they will be ashamed,” he said.
Mr. Moi also casted doubt on the court’s verdict, saying the judgment was based on issues that could not justify nullification.
He said he will be hitting the campaign trail knowing that the people of Lugari Ward already have his agenda, and his is to just affirm the win for good.
The leader won last year’s election with 1,764 votes ahead of his Makhalanya who emerged fourth with 1,064 votes.
