Kenyans turned out in large numbers on Wednesday for the Azimio-led national prayer rally at Jevanjee Gardens in Nairobi.
The rally, led by Azimio leader Raila Odinga and other Azimio principals, was met with a warm welcome from the attendees as they made their way into the grounds.
Kenyans carried empty plates, spoons, and sufurias (cooking pots) to protest against the high cost of living that has sparked uproar across the country.
The plates were raised in the air during the prayer rally in a symbolic act of protest.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga led other opposition leaders, including Narc leader Martha Karua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former defence CS Eugene Wamalwa, former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, and Roots party leader George Wajackoya, among other leaders, for the prayer rally in the city’s central business district (CBD).
Raila has been leading a series of campaigns to decry the high cost of living, which has made life unbearable for many Kenyans.
This is the first time that Raila is leading a prayer rally alongside other opposition luminaries and a legion of supporters in the city’s CBD.
The peaceful rally follows similar demonstrations held by other organizations and residents to protest the high cost of living, including a recent march led by Justice for Africa in Nairobi on Monday.
The protesters, who carried a petition to the Office of the Deputy President and the Ministry of Education, complained that the high cost of living had led to the doubling of prices for basic commodities such as cooking oil, maize flour, wheat flour, and sugar. As a result, they said, children are being kept out of school.
