Alarm as 12,000 out of 16,000 students test positive for STI

An education officer has revealed how students’ reckless behavior has led to the rise of STI cases.

Twitter has gone wild this morning following a report that 12,000 out of 16,000 students in Kirinyaga County tested positive for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI).

An education officer in Kirinyaga Central Sub-county, Kennedy Machora, while addressing parents at New Kerugoya Victory Academy, said medics in county health facilities were alarmed by the high number of students who sought treatment.

The realization prompted an emergency meeting between the Ministry of Education, the local security team and the Ministry of Health to discuss how tests will be done in schools.

The education officer further said that a decision was arrived at with school managements to test the learners.

He lamented rising number of students abusing drugs and engaging in unprotected sex.
