Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has a plan to build 14 sports fields across the county on a Sh100 million budget.
The program will involve the national government in its initiative to host the African Cup of Nations in 2027.
“In 2027, Kenya may host the African Cup of Nations, and I know Mumias Sports Complex Center will be one of the venues, when we host the tournament. We will also complete the Bukhungu International Stadium in collaboration with the National Government,” he said.
The governor said this during the awarding ceremony for Umri FC, who emerged champions of the recently concluded Kakamega Governor’s Bonanza.
Umri FC was awarded Sh500, 000 as the best male team, while Mwira Ladies walked away with Sh150, 000 as the best female team.
Teams were awarded a total of Sh1.2 million during the event at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Barasa also promised to sponsor the formation of football academies across the county to identify and nurture football talent across all the wards.
