A man from Bungoma County has headed to court to compel his former in-laws to refund his dowry after his 4-year-old marriage crumpled down.
Wilberforce Saenyi Murunga, 52, claims that his former wife, Irene Mitekho Khaoya, with whom they hadn’t had children yet, compromised their marriage after she started leaving their matrimonial home anyhow.
Mr. Murunga had adhered to every detail of the Bukusu customary law by paying a dowry worth KSh 50,000, Ayrshire heifers, one cross Ayrshire bullock, one she-goat, a pair of gumboots and a hat. This was in a bid to seal his marriage.

The ex-wife’s family, comprising her mother, Florence Khaoya, brother Edwin Khaoya in the company of relatives, had visited his home to collect the dowry and appended signatures thereafter.
Court charges
In the case presented before Kitale Chief Magistrate Julius Ngar, the man is demanding for interest to be added on the cash and property, plus any other relief the court may find necessary.
The disappointed man backed up his charges by claiming that the former wife and his mother-in-law had conspired to defraud him of his hard-earned wealth.
