A solemn burial ceremony in Budalangi, Busia County, turned into a tragic and horrifying scene on Friday after a mourner suddenly collapsed and died, falling into the grave that had been prepared for another deceased person.
The man, who had been playing drums as part of a church choir performing at the graveside, collapsed just as hymns reached a powerful crescendo. In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the drummer is seen losing balance and tumbling into the open grave, an incident that left mourners screaming in disbelief.
Witnesses reported that the choir had been performing the final hymns before the body of the deceased was to be lowered. The sudden fall startled a pallbearer and nearly disrupted the burial rites. Three mourners immediately jumped into the grave to try and rescue the man, but tragically, he was found lifeless.
According to reports aired by Mulembe FM, the man was declared dead on the spot. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but many online have speculated a possible cardiac arrest.
The chilling video, which ended as mourners looked on in shock while the man’s body was lifted out of the grave, has prompted a flood of reactions across the country.
Social media users, particularly from the Luhya community, shared condolences while also expressing spiritual interpretations of the incident. Some commented on the eerie timing of the death, which they claimed could signal a deeper, mysterious connection between the two deceased individuals.
The identity of the deceased mourner has not yet been publicly disclosed as investigations continue.
