Police got a tip from residents after they spotted the vehicle making rounds.

Police are in hot pursuit of Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa after illegally fitting a government vehicle with campaign posters bearing his picture, that of DP William Ruto and the UDA party.

The MP is also accused of illegally changing the number plate of the vehicle from GK948J to KBS 709 D, which is said to belong to one of his brother’s vehicles.

The legislator, who is looking to defend his seat at the August polls, is facing forgery charges and theft of a government vehicle.

Kimilili sub-county Senior Superintendent of Police Mwita Maroa said the vehicle was recovered from Barasa’s residence in Nasianda Village after police broke into the home despite being blocked by Barasa’s security.

The police officer called the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to confirm if the vehicle was registered under Mr. Barasa’s name.

“We took the initiative to go to the CDF offices but did not find it there, so we proceeded to his home where we found it.

“We did this in a joint operation involving officers from the government vehicles check unit, officers from Nairobi, the Serious Crimes Unit, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations from Nairobi and Kimilili,” Mr. Maroa told the media.

Barasa has claimed the incident was a plot by his political rivals to intimidate him.
