Renowned activist and comedian Eric Omondi made headlines on Mashujaa Day after donning a bui bui in an attempt to evade police and make his way into Uhuru Park, where he had planned a parallel celebration.
The event was timed to coincide with the official Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Kwale, and Omondi intended to use the occasion to express his growing dissatisfaction with the government.
According to Omondi, he had received credible information that police were allegedly planning to harm him if he showed up at Uhuru Park. In a bid to outsmart the authorities, the activist dressed in the traditional bui bui attire to conceal his identity and gain entry unnoticed.
However, his efforts were short-lived. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Omondi revealed that chaos erupted at around 12 p.m., and when others scattered, his inability to run in the flowing attire led to the police uncovering his true identity.
As tensions escalated, Omondi’s girlfriend, Lynne, took to social media, claiming that he had been abducted. Her posts quickly attracted attention, adding a dramatic twist to the unfolding situation.
“I am free,”Omondi said, dismissing claims by his girlfriend.
